Making “Emotional Cents” of Our Emotional Being

Making “Emotional Cents” of Our Emotional Being

I have always been one who loves analogies and have found them to be an effective way to learn and retain valuable information which, in turn, can be easily applied in everyday life. So, as it was the other day, I started thinking about much of my readings, life-lessons, self-experiences, insights, and overall deep-rooted passion and practices to becoming more of a conscious parent. What dawned on me the number of descriptive similarities between our emotional being to that of a bank account.

What I did not realize at the time is Dr. Stephen Covey, most known for his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People also created something similar called the “Emotional Bank Account or “EBA” which he has described as being similar to a bank account – where you can make deposits or withdrawls from each of your family relationships.

Depending on the “banking” category, you will find there are multiple ways and cross-overs in which we can consciously value or unconsciously devalue our emotional being. The foundational elements I have outlined below can be used in all facets of our lives from parenting and personal / professional relationships to interacting and connecting with our children and providing them with a conscious emotional compass to better relate to their emotional beings.

DEPOSIT – This is what we consciously give to others:

  • Love
  • Heart
  • Compassion
  • Trust
  • Commitment
  • Acceptance
  • Appreciation
  • Understanding
  • Communication
  • Loyalty
  • Empathy
  • Support

WITHHOLD – This is what we keep to ourselves in fear of rejection, judgment, non-acceptance, betrayal, and lack of validation from others:

  • Feelings
  • Emotions
  • Thoughts
  • Beliefs
  • Love
  • Heart
  • Compassion
  • Trust
  • Commitment
  • Acceptance
  • Understanding
  • Communication
  • Loyalty
  • Empathy
  • Support
  • Apologies

WITHDRAWL – This is what we unconsciously allow others to take from us:

  • Self-respect
  • Dignity
  • Self-Worth
  • Intelligence
  • Heart
  • Soul
  • Power
  • Trust
  • Happiness

TRANSFER – This is what we unconsciously pass on to others:

  • Frustrations
  • Inner Lack
  • Unmet Needs
  • Dishonesty
  • Disrespect
  • Criticism
  • Ego
  • Anger
  • Insecurities
  • Past Conditionings
  • Power

BALANCE / SAVINGS – This is what we keep for ourselves depending on how we have consciously or unconsciously navigated through our emotional being.

– CONSCIOUSLY:

  • Integrity
  • Gratitude
  • Self-Love
  • Integrity
  • Acceptance
  • Self-compassion
  • Self-Worth
  • Dignity
  • Self-Respect
  • Power

– UNCONSCIOUSLY:

  • Frustrations
  • Inner Lack
  • Unmet Needs
  • Dishonesty
  • Disrespect
  • Criticism
  • Ego
  • Anger
  • Insecurities

So based on your current emotional status and self-evaluation, ask yourself if your emotional value is depleted or full? What has been the “cost” (or “savings”) of your well-being and those around you?
